Celebrating the International Year of Light 2015

Abstract:
One of the major scientific anniversaries that are being celebrated during the 2015 International Year of Light is Ibn Al-Haytham's works on optics (1015).  Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) wrote the “Book of Optics,” a 7-volume book that described the laws of reflection and refraction and the basics of visual perception.  Latin translations in the early 13th century influenced scholars in Europe, including Christiaan Hygens who provided a “modern” solution to the so-called Alhazen’s Problem of geometrical optics, and many Renaissance artists who used his technology of optical projections.   This talk will provide an overview of the Book of Optics, Alhazen’s problem, and Ibn al-Haytham’s strong emphasis on adoption of a scientific method based on experimentation.
